The STMicroelectronics BLUENRG-248 is a Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0-qualified wireless system-on-chip integrating an ARM Cortex-M0+ processor, 256 kB Flash memory, 24 kB RAM, and a complete BLE radio transceiver in a compact QFN-32 package. With programmable output power up to +8 dBm and receiver sensitivity of -96 dBm, it achieves a 104 dB link budget for extended range applications. The 256 kB Flash accommodates both the BLE protocol stack and user application code, while the 24 kB RAM supports simultaneous master and slave connections. The device is designed for low-power operation with 10.3 mA Tx current at +8 dBm and 7.3 mA Rx current, enabling coin-cell and energy-harvesting powered designs.

The BLUENRG-248 integrates a complete BLE radio and protocol stack on a single chip. The ARM Cortex-M0+ core runs at up to 32 MHz, executing both the BLE link layer and the user application from the 256 kB Flash. The BLE radio transceiver operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM band using frequency hopping across 40 channels (3 advertising + 37 data channels). The radio supports BLE data rates of 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps (BLE 5.0 high-speed mode). The embedded BLE stack handles advertising, scanning, connection establishment, and data exchange according to the BLE specification. The link layer manages packet formatting, CRC generation/checking, data whitening, and AES-128 encryption for secure connections. The +8 dBm output power is achieved through an integrated power amplifier with programmable gain, while the -96 dBm sensitivity comes from a low-noise receiver front-end with integrated LNA. Sleep modes reduce current to sub-microamp levels between connection events.
