The ATMEGA16A-AU is a member of the Atmel AVR family of 8-bit microcontrollers, now produced by Microchip Technology. It combines 16KB ISP Flash, 512B EEPROM, and 1KB SRAM in a 44-pin TQFP package. The AVR core uses Harvard architecture with separate instruction and data memories, enabling most instructions to execute in a single clock cycle for up to 16MIPS at 16MHz. The device includes 8-channel 10-bit ADC, USART, SPI, I2C, multiple timers, and JTAG interface for debugging and programming.

The ATMEGA16A-AU operates on AVR enhanced RISC architecture with two-stage pipeline. (1) CPU Core: 32 general-purpose registers directly connected to ALU allow two-register access in one instruction. (2) Memory: Flash stores program code with ISP capability; EEPROM retains data across power cycles; SRAM provides fast data access. (3) Peripherals: 10-bit SAR ADC with auto-triggering; USART/SPI/I2C for serial communication; 16-bit timer supports PWM and input capture.
