The ATMEGA162-16AU from Microchip Technology is a high-performance, low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller combining 16 KB of in-system programmable flash, 1 KB SRAM, and 512 bytes of EEPROM. The device supports throughput approaching 16 MIPS at 16 MHz by executing most instructions in a single clock cycle. It features dual programmable USARTs, a Master/Slave SPI interface, and a JTAG interface for on-chip debugging and boundary-scan. With 35 programmable I/O lines, six PWM channels, and multiple timer/counter options, the ATmega162 is well-suited for communication-intensive embedded applications.

The ATMEGA162-16AU uses the AVR enhanced RISC architecture with 131 instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle. The 32 general-purpose working registers are directly connected to the ALU, allowing two independent registers to be accessed in one instruction. The Harvard architecture separates program and data memory spaces. The 16 KB flash stores program code and supports in-system programming (ISP) and self-programming via a boot loader section. Dual USARTs provide independent asynchronous serial communication channels with full duplex capability. The SPI interface supports master and slave modes for high-speed synchronous communication. The JTAG interface provides access to boundary-scan testing and on-chip debugging without requiring external emulator hardware. Power management modes include Idle, Power-save, Power-down, Standby, and Extended Standby.
