The AD8418BRMZ-RL from Analog Devices is a high-voltage, high-resolution bidirectional current sense amplifier with a fixed gain of 20 V/V in an 8-lead MSOP package. Using a zero-drift core architecture, it achieves only 0.1 µV/°C typical offset drift and ±400 µV maximum offset voltage over the full -40°C to +125°C temperature range. The gain error is specified at ±0.15% maximum over temperature. The device accepts common-mode voltages from -2 V to +70 V while operating from a 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply, enabling high-side current sensing in 48 V automotive and industrial power systems. Integrated EMI filters reject high-frequency interference from PWM motor drive signals. The buffered output directly drives ADC inputs without additional buffer stages. The bidirectional architecture supports both charging and discharging current measurement using two reference pins.

The AD8418 uses a zero-drift chopped amplifier core to achieve ultra-low offset and drift. The input stage includes integrated EMI low-pass filters that reject high-frequency common-mode and differential noise before the signal reaches the amplifier. The differential voltage across the shunt resistor is amplified by the fixed gain of 20 V/V through a precision resistor network. The zero-drift architecture uses auto-zeroing techniques where the amplifier periodically measures and cancels its own offset, resulting in the 0.1 µV/°C drift specification. The output stage is a buffered voltage source capable of driving ADC inputs directly. Two reference pins (VREF1 and VREF2) set the output baseline voltage: when tied together and connected to VS/2, the output sits at VS/2 with zero differential input, allowing bidirectional current measurement. When one reference pin is grounded, unidirectional measurement is supported.
