The ADM4853ARZ from Analog Devices is a 5V slew-rate limited half-duplex RS-485/RS-422 transceiver supporting data rates up to 10Mbps. This is the tube-packaged version (ADM4853ARZ-REEL7 is the tape-and-reel version). The device features 1/8 unit load receiver input impedance allowing up to 256 transceivers on a single bus, true fail-safe receiver inputs that ensure logic high output when inputs are open or shorted, and reduced slew rate driver outputs for low EMI operation. The 5uA maximum shutdown current makes it suitable for battery-powered applications. Thermal shutdown and short-circuit protection prevent damage during fault conditions. The device is pin-compatible with the MAX308x family for drop-in replacement. Available in an 8-lead narrow-body SOIC package, specified over the -40 to +85C temperature range.

The ADM4853ARZ operates as a differential RS-485/RS-422 half-duplex transceiver. When DE is high, the driver converts single-ended DI input to differential output on A/B lines with slew-rate limiting. When RE is low, the receiver compares the differential voltage on A/B and outputs the result on RO with true fail-safe behavior. The 1/8 unit load high-impedance receiver input allows 256 devices per bus. Thermal shutdown disables the driver at approximately 150C junction temperature. Short-circuit current is limited to approximately 200mA.
