The A3906SESTR-T from Allegro MicroSystems is a low-voltage motor driver designed for pulse width modulated (PWM) control of low voltage stepper motors and single or dual DC motors. It is capable of output currents up to 1A per channel and operates from 2.5V to 9V, making it ideal for battery-powered applications. The device includes an internal fixed off-time PWM timer that sets a peak current based on the selection of a current sense resistor. An overcurrent output flag notifies the system when the motor winding current reaches the peak threshold. Synchronous rectification reduces power dissipation by conducting current through the low-RDS(ON) MOSFETs instead of body diodes during the off-time. The A3906 features crossover-current protection, undervoltage lockout, thermal shutdown, and a sleep function that reduces standby current to below 150uA. The device is available in a 20-pin 4mm x 4mm QFN package with exposed thermal pad.

The A3906SESTR-T operates as a dual full-bridge motor driver with integrated PWM current regulation. Key subsystems include: (1) Dual H-Bridge Output Stage – two independent full-bridge outputs using N-channel MOSFETs with 0.52Ohm RDS(ON), each capable of driving 1A continuous; (2) PWM Current Control – an internal fixed off-time PWM timer and current sense comparator regulate the motor winding current; when the voltage across the sense resistor exceeds the threshold, the PWM timer turns off the drive for a fixed off-time; (3) Charge Pump – generates the gate drive voltage above VBB for the high-side N-channel MOSFETs; (4) Synchronous Rectification – during the PWM off-time, current recirculates through the low-side MOSFETs instead of body diodes, reducing power dissipation; (5) Protection Logic – monitors for undervoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature conditions.
