The XCF16PFSG48C is an AMD (Xilinx) Platform Flash 16Mbit in-system programmable configuration PROM designed specifically for storing and loading Xilinx FPGA configuration bitstreams. The 16Mbit (2Mbyte) capacity is sufficient for large Virtex and Spartan FPGAs. The device supports both parallel output (for master-parallel FPGA configuration mode) and serial JTAG programming. The 15ns parallel access time enables fast FPGA configuration at system power-up. In-system programmability via JTAG allows field updates without removing the device. The device supports 3.3V or 2.5V I/O with internal 1.8V core. Multiple XCF devices can be cascaded for daisy-chain configuration of multiple FPGAs. Packaged in 48-pin VQFP rated for 0C to +70C (commercial grade).

The XCF16P uses a flash memory array organized as sectors for configuration data storage. In parallel mode, the FPGA controls the PROM address pins and reads configuration data from the data pins at up to 66MHz (15ns access). In serial/JTAG mode, the IEEE 1149.1 JTAG interface is used for both programming the flash array and reading data serially. The internal state machine handles programming algorithms including erase, program, and verify operations. For FPGA configuration, the PROM outputs data on the rising edge of the CLK signal from the FPGA. The DONE pin signals when all data has been read. The cascade pins allow multiple PROMs to be connected for larger bitstream storage, with the first PROM driving the cascade input of the second.
