The XC3S400A-4FTG256C is a cost-optimized Spartan-3A FPGA from AMD, offering 400K system gates (8,064 logic cells) with 16 dedicated 18×18 multipliers in a compact 256-pin FTBGA package. With 288 Kb of block RAM and 360 Kb of distributed RAM, it provides sufficient memory for buffering and coefficient storage in cost-sensitive DSP applications. The -4 speed grade delivers the highest performance in the commercial temperature range, with DCMs enabling flexible clock synthesis and phase alignment.

The XC3S400A-4FTG256C operates as a low-cost reconfigurable logic device on a 90nm process. The core fabric consists of Configurable Logic Blocks (CLBs) each containing 4 slices with 4-input lookup tables (LUT4), carry chains, and flip-flops. Each slice can implement any 4-input combinational function or serve as distributed RAM (SelectRAM+). The 16 DSP48A blocks provide dedicated 18×18-bit hardware multipliers with 48-bit accumulators for efficient FIR filtering and PID control. Block RAM (18Kb per block) supports dual-port access for simultaneous read/write operations. Digital Clock Managers (DCMs) use delay-locked loop (DLL) technology for clock deskew, frequency synthesis, and phase shifting. The Spartan-3A supports MultiBoot configuration, allowing multiple bitstreams to be stored and selected at runtime.
