The STMicroelectronics VNH7100ASTR is a full H-bridge motor driver from the latest VIPower M0-7 generation, designed for automotive brushed DC motor control up to 12 A. The device integrates dual monolithic high-side drivers and two low-side switches using ST’s proven VIPower technology, assembled in an SO-16N package on electrically isolated leadframes. With 100 mΩ typical on-resistance per leg, the device minimizes power dissipation while delivering substantial motor drive current. A key advancement over previous generations is the MultiSense feature, which provides multiplexed analog diagnostic information including motor current feedback, output short-to-ground/short-to-VCC detection, thermal shutdown indication, and off-state open-load detection. The SEL0 pin enables addressing different diagnostic information to the microcontroller. The device supports PWM operation up to 20 kHz for precise speed control and features a standby mode for ultra-low power consumption.

The VNH7100ASTR operates as a full H-bridge motor driver where input pins INA and INB control motor direction through a truth table, and the PWM pin enables speed control by modulating the low-side switches. The VIPower M0-7 technology integrates power MOSFETs with intelligent protection on the same die. The MultiSense pin (CS) delivers a current proportional to the motor current when the device is in normal operation, and provides diagnostic fault information including short-to-ground, short-to-battery, thermal shutdown, and open-load conditions. The SEL0 pin, combined with INA and INB states, selects which diagnostic information is multiplexed to the CS pin. Protection features include undervoltage shutdown below 4 V, overvoltage clamp for load dump protection, thermal shutdown with latched fault, cross-conduction prevention, and current limitation during short circuits. The half-bridge mode allows driving two independent unidirectional loads when full H-bridge operation is not required.
