The V20E275P from Littelfuse is a 20 mm epoxy-coated UltraMOV metal oxide varistor designed for high-energy transient voltage suppression on AC power lines. The device is rated for 275 VAC RMS continuous operation with a varistor voltage range of 387-473 V and clamps transients at 710 V under 100 A surge current. The 10 kA single-pulse surge current rating and 190 J energy absorption capability provide robust protection against lightning and switching transients. The bidirectional nature of the MOV clamps both positive and negative overvoltage events. UL 1449 recognized and IEC 61051 certified for safety compliance.

The V20E275P uses a polycrystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) ceramic body with intergranular boundaries that exhibit nonlinear current-voltage characteristics. Under normal operating voltage (below the varistor voltage), the device presents very high impedance (essentially an open circuit) with only microampere-level leakage current. When a transient voltage exceeds the varistor voltage, the ZnO grain boundaries undergo avalanche breakdown, causing the impedance to drop dramatically. This shunts the transient current away from the protected circuit while clamping the voltage to approximately 710 V. After the transient subsides, the device returns to its high-impedance state. The 20 mm disc provides sufficient thermal mass to absorb the 190 J of energy during a 2 ms transient event without degradation. The epoxy coating provides electrical insulation and mechanical protection while meeting UL 2500 V isolation requirements.
