The TPS61165DBVR from Texas Instruments is a high-brightness white LED boost driver featuring a 40V rated integrated switch FET with 1.2A current limit and 1.2MHz fixed switching frequency. Operating from 3V to 18V input, it drives up to 10 white LEDs in series with output voltages up to 38V. LED current is set by an external sense resistor with a 200mV feedback reference (2% accuracy). The CTRL pin provides dual dimming modes: EasyScale 1-wire digital interface for precise current control, or PWM dimming where duty cycle adjusts the reference voltage. The device does not burst the LED current in either mode, eliminating audible noise on output capacitors.

The TPS61165 is a current-mode boost converter that regulates LED current through a sense resistor from the FB pin to GND. The internal N-channel MOSFET switches at 1.2MHz, storing energy in the external inductor during the on-time and delivering it to the LED string through an external Schottky diode during the off-time. The current-mode control scheme provides cycle-by-cycle current limiting and stable operation with slope compensation for duty cycles above 40%. The CTRL pin serves as a multifunction control: a constant high enables normal operation, a PWM signal adjusts brightness by modulating the FB reference voltage, and the EasyScale protocol provides 1-wire digital brightness control. Open-LED protection monitors the SW pin voltage and disables the converter if the output exceeds 38V.
