The Texas Instruments TPS54202HDDCR is a 2A synchronous step-down converter in a tiny SOT-23-6 package, supporting input voltages from 4.5V to 28V. The device integrates both high-side and low-side MOSFETs, requiring only four external components (input capacitor, output capacitor, inductor, and feedback resistors) to complete the design. The 500 kHz fixed switching frequency balances efficiency and solution size, and the 1.2 MHz version (TPS54202) is available for even smaller inductors. The device achieves peak efficiency above 90% and maintains >80% efficiency down to 10 mA load in eco-mode (pulse skipping). The DCS-Control (Direct Control with Seamless Transition) topology provides fast transient response with minimal output voltage deviation—typically 2% overshoot/undershoot for a 1A load step—without requiring external compensation. The precision enable threshold (1.21V) allows adjustable UVLO using external resistors. The device supports pre-bias start-up, preventing discharge of the output capacitor during power-up when the output is already at a non-zero voltage. The extended -40C to +150C junction temperature range supports high-ambient industrial environments.

The TPS54202H uses TI’s DCS-Control topology, a proprietary control scheme that combines voltage-mode and current-mode control characteristics. In steady-state operation, the device operates in pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode at 500 kHz. When the output voltage drops below the setpoint, the controller extends the on-time of the high-side MOSFET, increasing the inductor current and restoring the output voltage. The seamless transition to eco-mode (pulse skipping) occurs when the load current drops below the boundary between continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). In eco-mode, switching cycles are skipped to reduce switching losses, and the output voltage ripple increases slightly but remains well-regulated. The internal soft-start (2.1 ms typical) limits inrush current during start-up. The feedback voltage is compared with an internal 0.6V reference, and the output voltage is set by VOUT = 0.6V x (1 + R1/R2). The integrated bootstrap circuit generates the gate drive voltage for the high-side NMOS switch.
