The TPS2553DBVR is a precision adjustable current-limited power distribution switch from Texas Instruments designed for applications requiring accurate current limiting or protection against heavy capacitive loads and short circuits. The device provides up to 1.5 A of continuous load current with a programmable current-limit threshold from 75 mA to 1.7 A via a single external resistor. Current-limit accuracy of ±6% is achieved at the higher current settings. The 85 mΩ high-side N-channel MOSFET switch features built-in soft start to minimize inrush current surges. During overcurrent conditions, the device limits output current to a safe level in constant-current mode. A reverse-voltage comparator disables the switch when the output voltage exceeds the input, providing bidirectional protection. The FAULT open-drain output indicates overcurrent and reverse-voltage events.

The TPS2553 uses an internal charge pump to drive the gate of an 85 mΩ N-channel MOSFET above the source voltage, enabling the high-side switch to operate from input voltages as low as 2.5 V. The current-sense amplifier monitors the load current through the MOSFET. When the current exceeds the programmed threshold (set by the ILIM resistor), the device enters constant-current mode by reducing the gate drive to limit the output current. The response time is approximately 2 µs. Reverse voltage protection is implemented by a comparator that monitors VOUT vs VIN; when VOUT exceeds VIN, the MOSFET is turned off to prevent reverse current flow. The FAULT open-drain output is asserted low during both overcurrent and reverse-voltage conditions. Soft start ramps the output voltage gradually during turn-on to minimize inrush current into capacitive loads.
