The TNY266PN from Power Integrations is part of the TinySwitch-II family of enhanced, energy-efficient, low-power off-line switchers. It integrates a 700V power MOSFET and ON/OFF controller in a single DIP-8 package, providing up to 10W output from universal 85-265VAC input. The device features built-in auto-restart for short circuit and open loop protection, frequency jittering for ~10dB EMI reduction, and simple ON/OFF control that eliminates the need for loop compensation. The 132kHz switching frequency allows use of small EF12.6 or EE13 transformer cores.

The TNY266PN uses a simple ON/OFF control scheme rather than traditional PWM. The EN/UV pin receives feedback from an optocoupler that monitors the output voltage. When the output voltage is below regulation, the controller enables switching cycles. When the output is above regulation, switching cycles are skipped. This hysteretic control eliminates the need for loop compensation and provides very fast transient response. The internal 700V MOSFET switches at 132kHz with frequency jittering to spread the switching harmonic energy, reducing EMI filter requirements. Auto-restart limits average output power during fault conditions to less than 2% of maximum.
