The TLC6C598QPWRQ1 is an AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified 8-bit shift register LED driver from Texas Instruments, designed for automotive and industrial LED driving applications. It features 8 open-drain DMOS transistor outputs rated at 40V and 50mA continuous sink current, with 200mA PWM peak capability. The device contains an 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register feeding an 8-bit D-type storage register with separate clocks (SRCK and RCK). The output enable (G) pin supports PWM dimming, while the CLR pin clears all registers simultaneously. Enhanced cascading via SER_OUT provides extra hold time for multi-device chains. Built-in thermal shutdown at 175°C and current derating with temperature protect the device. The slow output transition times (tr/tf ~210ns/128ns) significantly reduce EMI compared to standard logic outputs.

The TLC6C598 operates as a serial-to-parallel LED driver. Data is clocked into the 8-bit shift register on the rising edge of SRCK. After 8 bits are loaded, the RCK rising edge transfers the shift register data to the 8-bit storage register. When G is low (output enabled) and CLR is high, the storage register data drives the DMOS output transistors — a ‘1’ turns the output ON (sinking current to GND through the LED), a ‘0’ turns it OFF. The open-drain DMOS outputs can drive LEDs connected to a separate supply voltage up to 40V, independent of the 3-5.5V logic supply. PWM dimming is achieved by toggling the G pin at the desired duty cycle. For cascading multiple devices, SER_OUT provides the shift register output on the falling edge of SRCK, ensuring adequate hold time for the next device’s SER_IN. The thermal shutdown disables all outputs when the junction temperature exceeds 175°C, and output current naturally decreases at higher temperatures for additional self-protection.
