The TL431BIDBZR from Nexperia is a three-terminal adjustable precision shunt regulator with 0.5% reference voltage tolerance (B grade). The output voltage can be set to any value between the 2.495V reference and 36V using two external resistors. The 0.2 Ohm typical output impedance provides stable voltage regulation under load variations. The device can sink 1 mA to 100 mA of cathode current, making it suitable for bias networks and feedback loops. The sharp turn-on characteristic makes it an excellent replacement for Zener diodes in precision applications. The SOT-23-3 package provides a compact footprint for space-constrained designs.

The TL431BIDBZR integrates a precision 2.495V bandgap reference, an error amplifier, and an open-collector NPN output transistor in a three-terminal package. The REF pin is compared against the internal 2.495V reference by the error amplifier. When the voltage at REF exceeds the reference, the error amplifier drives the output transistor harder, increasing cathode current and pulling the cathode voltage lower. This negative feedback action regulates the cathode voltage. When used as a shunt regulator, two external resistors form a voltage divider from the cathode to the REF pin. The output voltage equals Vref x (1 + R1/R2) + Iref x R1, where Iref is typically 2 uA. For isolated SMPS feedback, the cathode drives the LED of an optocoupler, and the REF pin monitors the output voltage through a resistor divider.
