The TB6600HG is a PWM chopper-type bipolar stepper motor driver IC from Toshiba with integrated power MOSFETs capable of driving up to 4.5A per phase continuously (5A peak) from a 42V supply. The built-in 0.4Ω MOSFETs eliminate the need for external transistors. The device supports microstepping from full step to 1/16 step via three mode-select pins. A simple clock-direction interface allows easy MCU control. The PWM chopper regulates winding current with the chopping frequency set by an external resistor. Protection features include thermal shutdown (TSD) at 160°C with configurable auto-recovery or latch mode, overcurrent detection (ISD) at 6.5A, and undervoltage lockout (UVLO). The HZIP-25 through-hole package provides excellent thermal dissipation with a tab for heatsink mounting.

The TB6600HG uses a PWM chopper scheme to regulate current through the two motor windings. The CLK pin receives step pulses; each rising edge advances the internal indexer by one microstep. The indexer generates the two sinusoidal phase current targets according to the selected microstep resolution. The PWM chopper compares the actual winding current (sensed through the internal MOSFETs) with the target: when the current exceeds the target, the high-side MOSFET turns off for the chopper off-time, allowing the current to decay through the low-side MOSFET. The off-time is set by the external Rosc resistor. The direction of rotation is controlled by the CW/CCW pin. The ENABLE pin enables or disables all outputs, and the RESET pin returns the indexer to the initial position (home state). The TSD circuit monitors junction temperature; when it exceeds 160°C, all outputs are disabled and the ALERT pin goes low. The LATCH/AUTO pin selects whether TSD recovery is automatic (when temperature drops to 90°C) or requires an ENABLE toggle. The ISD circuit monitors current through each MOSFET; if overcurrent is detected (>6.5A), all outputs are immediately disabled until ENABLE is toggled. The UVLO circuit disables outputs when VCC drops below 8V.
