The SST25VF020B-80-4I-SAE-T from Microchip Technology is a 2Mbit (256K x 8) SPI serial Flash memory device manufactured with SST proprietary SuperFlash CMOS technology. The split-gate cell design and thick-oxide tunneling injector provide superior reliability with 100,000-cycle endurance and greater than 100 years data retention. The device supports SPI Mode 0 and Mode 3 with clock frequencies up to 80MHz for fast read access. Programming and erase operations use a single 2.7V to 3.6V supply. The flexible erase architecture supports uniform 4KB sectors, 32KB overlay blocks, and 64KB overlay blocks. Byte programming takes only 7us typical, and the Auto Address Increment (AAI) programming mode reduces total chip programming time. The HOLD pin allows suspending serial communication without deselecting the device, and the WP pin enables or disables the lock-down function of the status register block-protection bits.

The SST25VF020B-80-4I-SAE-T operates through four main subsystems: (1) SPI interface – The serial peripheral interface receives commands, addresses, and data through the SI pin, clocked by SCK. The device is selected by driving CE# low. Data is output on the SO pin on the falling edge of SCK. Both SPI Mode 0 (CPOL=0, CPHA=0) and Mode 3 (CPOL=1, CPHA=1) are supported. The 80MHz clock enables read throughput of up to 10MB/s. (2) Memory array – The 2Mbit storage array is organized as 256K x 8 bits, divided into 64 sectors of 4KB each, with 32KB and 64KB overlay blocks for flexible erase operations. The SuperFlash split-gate cell uses Fowler-Nordheim tunneling for erase and channel hot-electron injection for programming, providing the excellent endurance and retention characteristics. (3) Program/erase engine – Internal high-voltage generation circuits provide the voltages needed for programming and erase without external supplies. The chip-erase time is 35ms typical, sector/block erase is 18ms typical, and byte-program is 7us typical. The AAI (Auto Address Increment) programming mode automatically increments the address after each byte, significantly reducing total programming time. (4) Protection and control – The status register contains block-protection bits (BP1, BP0, BPL) that control write protection of the memory array. The WP# pin enables the lock-down function of the BPL bit, preventing unauthorized changes to protection settings. The HOLD# pin temporarily pauses serial communication without resetting the device state.
