The SST25PF040C-40I/SN from Microchip Technology is a 4Mbit SPI serial Flash memory manufactured with proprietary SuperFlash CMOS technology. The device features a four-wire SPI-compatible interface (Mode 0 and Mode 3) operating at up to 40MHz, with dual I/O fast-read instructions for increased data throughput. The 2.3V to 3.6V single-voltage read and write operation simplifies power supply design. The flexible erase architecture includes 4KB uniform sectors and 64KB overlay blocks. The SuperFlash split-gate cell design with thick-oxide tunneling injector provides superior reliability with 100,000 cycle endurance and greater than 20-year data retention. The device is AEC-Q100 qualified for automotive applications. The 40I/SN suffix denotes 40MHz, industrial temperature range, and 8-SOIC package.

The SST25PF040C-40I/SN operates as an SPI serial Flash memory. (1) The SuperFlash split-gate cell design uses a thick-oxide tunneling injector for programming and erasing. Compared to standard stacked-gate NOR Flash, the split-gate architecture prevents over-erase, provides lower programming current, and shorter erase time, resulting in lower total energy consumption during write operations. (2) The SPI interface uses four signal lines: CE# (chip enable), SCK (serial clock), SI/SIO0 (serial input), and SO/SIO1 (serial output). Standard read operations shift address and data serially at up to 40MHz. Dual-output fast-read (3BH) uses both SI and SO pins for 2x data output rate. Dual I/O fast-read (BBH) uses both pins for address input and data output, further reducing access time. (3) Write operations require the Write-Enable (WREN) instruction before any program or erase. The Block-Protection bits (BP0, BP1, BP2, TB) in the status register control write protection for different memory regions. The BPL (Block-Protection Lock-Down) bit, enabled by the WP# pin, makes protection bits read-only for permanent write protection.
