The SN65HVD234DR from Texas Instruments is a 3.3V CAN bus transceiver with ultra-low-power sleep mode in a SOIC-8 package. Compliant with ISO 11898-2 and GIFT/ICT standards, the device provides reliable differential CAN bus communication at data rates up to 1Mbps. The bus pins feature +/-36V fault protection and +/-16kV HBM ESD protection for operation in harsh industrial environments. The extended common-mode range of -7V to +12V ensures reliable communication in the presence of ground shifts. The SN65HVD234 variant features an enable (EN) pin that places the device into an ultra-low-power sleep mode with only 50nA typical current consumption, ideal for battery-powered and always-on CAN nodes. The Rs pin provides three operating modes: high-speed (Rs = GND), slew-rate control (Rs = resistor to GND), and standby/listen-only (Rs = VCC). High input impedance supports up to 120 nodes on the bus. LVTTL I/O pins are 5V tolerant.
The SN65HVD234DR converts between TTL logic levels and CAN bus differential signals. (1) Driver: When the D input is logic low, the driver pulls CANH high and CANL low (domant state). When D is high, both outputs are high-impedance (recessive state). The driver output is controlled by the EN pin – driving EN low disables the driver. (2) Receiver: The receiver detects the differential voltage between CANH and CANL. If V(CANH) – V(CANL) >= 0.9V, the R output is low (dominant). If V(CANH) – V(CANL) <= 0.5V, R is high (recessive). The receiver remains active in standby mode for listen-only operation. (3) Slew Rate: The Rs pin controls driver slew rate. Rs = GND enables fastest transitions. A resistor to GND limits the slew rate to reduce EMI. Rs = VCC enters standby mode. (4) Sleep Mode: When EN is driven low, both driver and receiver are disabled. The 50nA sleep current makes this suitable for battery-powered nodes that wake on bus activity.
