The SN65HVD10DR is a 3.3V-powered RS-485/RS-422 half-duplex transceiver from Texas Instruments designed for balanced data transmission over long cables. With its 1/8 unit load rating, up to 256 devices can share a single RS-485 bus without exceeding the 32-unit-load limit. The device supports data rates up to 10Mbps, making it suitable for high-speed industrial communication protocols. The extended common-mode range of -7V to 12V provides excellent noise immunity in electrically harsh environments. The driver features thermal shutdown and current-limiting protection against short circuits. The receiver includes a fail-safe feature that ensures a logic-high output when the inputs are open or shorted.

The SN65HVD10DR converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic signals to differential RS-485/RS-422 signals for noise-immune transmission over balanced twisted-pair cables. The driver takes a single-ended input (D) and produces complementary outputs (A, B) with controlled slew rate. The ¯RE pin enables the receiver, which senses the differential voltage between A and B and outputs the corresponding logic level on R. The DE pin enables the driver. In half-duplex mode, only one device drives the bus at a time. The 1/8 unit load design reduces bus loading, allowing more nodes on the same network. The differential signaling rejects common-mode noise, enabling reliable communication over long cable runs.
