The SN65HVD08DR from Texas Instruments is a 3.3 V RS-485 half-duplex transceiver supporting data rates up to 20 Mbps for high-speed industrial communication. The 1/8 unit load receiver input impedance allows up to 256 transceivers on a single bus. 16 kV HBM ESD protection on the bus pins provides robust handling immunity. The device is hot-plug capable, ensuring bus stability when devices are connected or disconnected under power. Pin compatibility with the industry-standard 75176 transceiver simplifies design migration. The 3.3 V single supply operation matches modern low-voltage MCU logic levels without level translation.

The SN65HVD08DR integrates a differential line driver and a differential line receiver. The driver converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic on the DI pin to a differential output on the A and B bus pins when DE is high. The receiver converts the differential signal on the A and B pins to a single-ended output on the RO pin when RE is low. In half-duplex mode, DE and RE are tied together for alternating transmit and receive operation. The high 20 Mbps data rate is achieved through optimized driver output transition times and receiver bandwidth. The 1/8 unit load input impedance (96 kOhm minimum) presents minimal loading to the bus, enabling large multi-drop networks. Hot-plug circuitry ensures that the driver and receiver outputs remain in high-impedance during power-up transients, preventing bus disruption.
