The TPA3116D2DADR from Texas Instruments is a high-efficiency stereo class-D audio power amplifier capable of delivering up to 50W per channel into 4 Ohm speakers from a 24V supply in BTL configuration. The 92% typical efficiency eliminates the need for a heatsink in many applications. The programmable power limiting feature uses an external resistor to set the maximum output power, protecting speakers from damage at high supply voltages. Four gain settings (20, 26, 32, 36 dB) are selectable via two gain pins. The device supports both single-ended (stereo) and bridge-tied load (mono or stereo) output configurations. Integrated protection circuits include thermal shutdown, overcurrent protection, and short-circuit protection with automatic recovery. The high 1.2 MHz switching frequency allows use of small output filter inductors.

The TPA3116D2DADR uses a PWM (pulse-width modulation) class-D architecture. The audio input signal is compared with a 1.2 MHz triangle wave in a comparator to generate a PWM signal whose duty cycle is proportional to the instantaneous input voltage. This PWM signal drives a half-bridge (SE mode) or full-bridge (BTL mode) power output stage consisting of low-RDS(on) MOSFETs. An external LC low-pass filter on the output reconstructs the audio signal by removing the switching frequency and its harmonics. In BTL mode, two half-bridges drive the speaker differentially, doubling the voltage swing across the load and providing 4x the output power compared to SE mode with the same supply. The programmable power limiter monitors the output signal level and reduces the duty cycle when it exceeds the threshold set by the PLIMIT resistor, providing speaker protection. The high 92% efficiency is achieved because the output MOSFETs operate as switches (fully on or fully off), dissipating very little power compared to linear amplifiers where the output transistors operate in their linear region.
