The SMCJ30A-E3/57T is a Littelfuse bidirectional transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode with a 30V standoff voltage and 1500W peak pulse power dissipation in the industry-standard SMC (DO-214AB) surface-mount package. The 30V standoff is designed to protect 24V automotive and industrial bus rails, with the breakdown voltage specified between 33.3V and 36.8V ensuring the TVS begins conducting before the protected circuit is damaged. The 48.4V maximum clamping voltage at 16.7A peak pulse current limits the voltage stress on downstream components during transient events. The 1500W peak pulse power rating (10/1000µs waveform) provides robust protection against automotive load dump and industrial surge events. The A suffix indicates bidirectional clamping, protecting against both positive and negative transients. The E3/57T suffix denotes RoHS-compliant, gull-wing lead finish. The AEC-Q101 qualification ensures reliability in automotive applications. The low 1µA leakage current at standoff voltage minimizes power consumption in always-on circuits.

A TVS diode operates as a voltage-clamping device. Under normal operating conditions (voltage below VRWM), the TVS presents a very high impedance (leakage <1µA), effectively invisible to the circuit. When a transient voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage (VBR), the TVS enters avalanche breakdown, conducting large currents while clamping the voltage at VC. The clamping action limits the voltage seen by the protected circuit to a safe level. For the bidirectional SMCJ30A, two back-to-back Zener junctions provide symmetric clamping for both positive and negative transients. The 1500W peak pulse power rating is determined by the thermal mass of the silicon die and the package, specifying the maximum energy the device can absorb in a 10/1000µs pulse without failure. After the transient, the TVS returns to its high-impedance state.
