The device provides a stable 18V breakdown voltage with +/-5% tolerance, suitable for voltage regulation, reference generation, and overvoltage protection. The 500mW power dissipation rating supports continuous Zener currents up to approximately 27mA (limited by P/V = 500mW/18V), adequate for most regulation and bias applications. The 20 Ohm typical Zener impedance at the test current ensures stable output voltage with reasonable load regulation. Reverse leakage current of 0.1uA at 13.7V (approximately 75% of VZ) minimizes power waste in always-on protection circuits. The SMA package provides a compact footprint (5.2mm x 2.6mm) compatible with automated surface-mount assembly, and its glass-passivated junction ensures reliable operation across the -65C to +150C temperature range. The SMAZ18-13-F operates in the reverse breakdown region for voltage regulation. (1) Reverse Bias: When reverse voltage applied across the diode reaches the Zener voltage (VZ = 18V), the diode enters breakdown and conducts current in the reverse direction while maintaining a relatively constant voltage across its terminals. This is the Zener effect for voltages below approximately 5V and avalanche multiplication for higher voltages (the 18V device uses avalanche breakdown). (2) Regulation: In a typical shunt regulator circuit, a series resistor limits the current through the Zener diode. The Zener maintains approximately 18V across the load, with excess current flowing through the diode. Changes in input voltage or load current are absorbed by varying the Zener current while the output voltage remains nearly constant. (3) Impedance: The 20 Ohm Zener impedance means the output voltage changes by approximately 20mV per mA change in Zener current. Lower impedance Zeners provide tighter regulation. (4) Forward Operation: Like any diode, the SMAZ18-13-F also conducts in the forward direction with approximately 0.9V forward voltage at 10mA.
