The SM712-TP from Micro Commercial Components is a bidirectional TVS diode array specifically designed to protect RS-485 and RS-422 communication interfaces from electrostatic discharge, electrical fast transients, and surge events. The device features asymmetric working voltages (12V for the A line, 7V for the B line) that match the typical signal swing of RS-485 transceivers, providing optimal clamping without interfering with normal communication. It provides IEC 61000-4-2 protection up to plus/minus 30kV for both contact and air discharge, IEC 61000-4-4 EFT immunity of 80A (5/50ns), and IEC 61000-4-5 surge current handling of 3.5A (8/20us). The capacitance of 50pF on the A line and 75pF on the B line is low enough to support RS-485 data rates up to 10Mbps without signal degradation. The SOT-23 package allows placement directly at the connector for maximum protection effectiveness.

The SM712-TP integrates two bidirectional TVS diode stacks in a single SOT-23 package, one for each RS-485 data line. Under normal operating conditions, both diodes are in their high-impedance off state, presenting only 50-75pF of capacitive loading and less than 1uA of leakage to the communication lines. When an ESD, EFT, or surge transient exceeds the breakdown voltage of the relevant diode stack, the device avalanches and shunts the surge current to ground, clamping the voltage on the protected line. The A-line diode stack clamps at 24V (at 3.5A) with a 12V working voltage, while the B-line stack clamps at 14V (at 3.5A) with a 7V working voltage. This asymmetry matches the typical common-mode and differential voltage ranges of RS-485 transceivers, providing tighter protection than symmetric devices.
