The S5GC-13-F is a 5A, 400V surface-mount general purpose rectifier from Diodes Incorporated featuring glass passivated die construction for reliable operation. The device delivers 5A average forward current with a maximum forward voltage drop of 1.15V at rated current. It can withstand non-repetitive surge currents up to 200A peak, making it suitable for applications with high inrush currents. The SMC (DO-214AB) package provides a compact surface-mount footprint with excellent power dissipation. The device is lead-free, RoHS compliant, and halogen/antimony free (Green device), making it suitable for environmentally conscious designs.

The S5GC-13-F uses a glass passivated silicon PN junction diode. In glass passivation, a layer of glass is deposited over the junction perimeter to protect it from contamination and moisture, improving reliability and reducing reverse leakage current. The diode conducts current in the forward direction when the anode voltage exceeds the cathode voltage by approximately 0.7V (silicon threshold). The forward voltage increases to a maximum of 1.15V at the rated 5A current due to the bulk resistance of the silicon and the contact resistance. In reverse bias, the depletion region widens and blocks current flow up to the 400V peak repetitive reverse voltage rating. Reverse leakage is limited to 10 µA at the maximum rated voltage. The 200A surge rating is achieved by the large die area and robust bond wire construction, allowing the device to absorb the energy from initial power-on inrush currents or transient overloads without failure. The standard recovery time (>500 ns) means this device is best suited for line-frequency (50/60 Hz) rectification rather than high-frequency switching applications.
