The MPQ3910GS is a Monolithic Power Systems 4-switch buck-boost controller for LED driving and battery charging applications. It operates from 4.5V to 36V input and supports seamless transitions between buck, boost, and buck-boost modes. The device provides constant current and constant voltage regulation with analog and PWM dimming support. Programmable switching frequency (200-600kHz) with external sync capability, output OVP/UVP, and thermal shutdown make it suitable for automotive headlights, battery charging, and industrial LED systems.

The MPQ3910GS controls four external N-channel MOSFETs in a 4-switch buck-boost topology. In buck mode (VIN > VOUT), switches Q1 (high-side) and Q2 (low-side) operate while Q3 is on and Q4 is off. In boost mode (VIN < VOUT), Q3 (low-side) and Q4 (high-side) operate while Q1 is on and Q2 is off. In the buck-boost region (VIN ≈ VOUT), all four switches operate to maintain output regulation. The seamless mode transition algorithm prevents output voltage dips or spikes during transitions. The CC loop regulates the output current through a sense resistor, while the CV loop limits the maximum output voltage. Analog dimming adjusts the CC reference via the ISET pin, and PWM dimming chops the output current via the DIM pin.
