Operating from 4.5V to 28V input, it provides up to 3A output current with programmable switching frequency from 100kHz to 1.5MHz. The SOIC-8E (SOICW) package provides excellent thermal performance.

The MPS MP1584EN-LF-Z is a 3A step-down converter with integrated high-side MOSFET, operating from 4.5V to 28V input. With programmable switching frequency up to 1.5MHz and pulse-skip mode for light-load efficiency, it is one of the most popular DIY and commercial buck converter ICs. Note: This product is not recommended for new designs; MP2338GTL is the recommended replacement.

The MP1584EN-LF-Z uses current-mode control with an integrated N-channel high-side MOSFET to regulate the output voltage. During the on-time, the high-side MOSFET conducts, storing energy in the output inductor. During the off-time, the external Schottky diode (or body diode) provides the inductor current path. The error amplifier compares the divided output voltage with the 0.8V internal reference to control the duty cycle. The pulse-skip mode reduces switching frequency at light loads to maintain high efficiency. Frequency foldback limits the on-time during startup to prevent inductor current runaway.
