The MOC3043XSM from ISOCOM Components is a 6-pin zero-crossing triac driver optocoupler in a surface-mount DIP package. The device consists of a gallium arsenide infrared emitting diode optically coupled to a monolithic silicon detector incorporating a zero-crossing bilateral triac driver. The zero-crossing circuit ensures that the triac output only triggers when the AC mains voltage is near zero, dramatically reducing the inrush current and electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated during switching. The 5mA maximum LED trigger current allows direct drive from most microcontroller GPIO pins with a simple series resistor. The 400V peak blocking voltage supports 240VAC RMS mains operation with adequate margin. The 5.3kVrms isolation voltage provides safe electrical separation between the low-voltage control circuit and the high-voltage AC load. The device is UL and VDE approved for safety-critical applications. The surface-mount DIP-6 package allows compact PCB layouts while maintaining the necessary creepage and clearance distances for high-voltage isolation.

The MOC3043XSM combines an IR LED and a zero-crossing triac driver in an optically coupled package. (1) LED Input: When forward current flows through the infrared LED (pins 1-2), it emits infrared radiation that illuminates the photodetector. (2) Photodetector: The photodetector receives the IR signal and generates base drive current for the zero-crossing detection circuit and the triac driver. (3) Zero-Crossing Circuit: The zero-crossing detector monitors the voltage across the main terminals (pins 4-6). When the LED is on, the triac output can only trigger when the mains voltage crosses zero (below approximately 20V). This prevents switching during high-voltage portions of the AC cycle, reducing inrush current and EMI. (4) Triac Output: The bilateral triac output can conduct current in both directions, making it suitable for AC load control. The output is designed to drive the gate of a larger power triac that switches the actual load current. (5) Isolation: The optical coupling provides 5.3kVrms galvanic isolation between the input LED and the output triac, protecting the low-voltage control circuit from the high-voltage AC mains.
