The MIC5209-5.0YM-TR from Microchip Technology (formerly Micrel) is a 500mA low-noise LDO regulator with 5.0V fixed output in SOT-89-3 package. The device features 100uV RMS output noise, 70dB PSRR at 1kHz, and 350mV typical dropout voltage at 250mA. The low noise and high PSRR make it ideal for RF and analog circuit power supply. The device is stable with only 2.2uF output capacitor and includes current limit and thermal shutdown protection. The YM-TR suffix denotes SOT-89-3 package with tape and reel.

The MIC5209-5.0YM-TR operates as a low-noise LDO linear regulator. (1) The PNP pass transistor provides low dropout voltage (350mV typical at 250mA) by operating with minimal collector-emitter overhead. The internal bandgap reference and error amplifier maintain tight output voltage regulation over line, load, and temperature variations. (2) The 100uV RMS output noise is achieved through a low-noise bandgap reference design and optimized compensation. The noise spectral density is flat from 10Hz to 100kHz, making the output suitable for noise-sensitive analog and RF circuits. The 70dB PSRR at 1kHz rejects input supply ripple, effectively cleaning up switcher noise in post-regulation applications. (3) The current limit protects against output short circuits by restricting the maximum output current. The thermal shutdown disables the output when junction temperature exceeds the safe limit, preventing damage from excessive power dissipation. The SOT-89-3 package provides better thermal performance than SOT-23 with a thermal tab connected to GND.
