The MIC2981/82YWM from Microchip Technology is an 8-channel high-current sink driver in a SOIC-20W package. Each of the eight output channels can sink up to 500mA at voltages up to 50V, making the device suitable for driving LED arrays, relays, solenoids, and other inductive or resistive loads. The CMOS/TTL compatible inputs allow direct interface with microcontrollers and logic ICs. The MIC2981 has active-high inputs while the MIC2982 has active-low inputs. Internal thermal shutdown and overcurrent protection ensure reliable operation under fault conditions. The device is pin-compatible with the UDN2981/2982 series.

The MIC2981/82YWM uses Darlington sink driver topology for each channel. (1) Input: Each channel has a CMOS/TTL compatible input that controls the output state. The MIC2981 turns on the output when the input is high; the MIC2982 turns on when the input is low. (2) Darlington Output: Each output stage consists of a Darlington NPN transistor pair that can sink up to 500mA. The Darlington configuration provides high current gain, allowing the output to be driven directly from logic-level inputs. (3) Suppression Diodes: Internal suppression diodes are connected between each output and a common COM pin for inductive load kickback protection. (4) Protection: Thermal shutdown activates at approximately 150C junction temperature, disabling all outputs. Individual channel overcurrent protection limits each output to a safe level.
