The MCP2561-E/SN from Microchip Technology is a CAN Flexible Data Rate (FD) transceiver in a SOIC-8 package. The device is fully compliant with the ISO 11898-2:2016 standard and supports both classical CAN (up to 1Mbps) and CAN FD (up to 8Mbps) protocols. The CAN FD capability enables faster data rates and longer payload frames (up to 64 bytes) compared to classical CAN, reducing bus utilization and improving network efficiency in modern automotive and industrial applications. The transceiver provides the physical layer interface between the CAN protocol controller and the physical bus, with differential transmit and receive capability. The SOIC-8 package is pin-compatible with the older MCP2551, providing a simple upgrade path to CAN FD. The device features standby mode with 10uA typical current consumption and remote wake-up capability via bus activity. TXD dominant timeout protection prevents permanent bus dominant state caused by a stuck TXD input. The -40C to +125C extended temperature range (E suffix) supports automotive under-hood applications.

The MCP2561-E/SN converts between the MCU’s digital CAN signals and the differential bus signals. (1) Transmit: When the MCU drives TXD low (dominant), the transceiver drives CANH high (~3.5V) and CANL low (~1.5V), creating a ~2V differential voltage on the bus. When TXD is high (recessive), both CANH and CANL are biased to ~2.5V (no differential voltage). (2) Receive: The differential receiver continuously monitors the CANH-CANL voltage. When the differential exceeds the threshold (~0.9V), RXD is driven low (dominant). When below the threshold, RXD is high (recessive). (3) CAN FD: During CAN FD data phases, the transceiver supports bit rates up to 8Mbps with faster edge rates while maintaining EMC compliance. The arbitration phase still uses 1Mbps or lower for backward compatibility. (4) Standby: In standby mode (STB pin high), the transmitter and main receiver are disabled, reducing current to 10uA. A low-power receiver monitors bus activity and pulls RXD low when a dominant bus state is detected, enabling remote wake-up of the MCU.
