The MCP4821-E/SN from Microchip Technology is a single-channel 12-bit buffered voltage output DAC with an integrated 2.048 V bandgap reference and SPI interface. The device operates from 2.7 V to 5.5 V with a typical operating current of 330 uA. The internal 2.048 V reference enables output voltage ranges of 0-2.048 V (1x gain) or 0-4.096 V (2x gain). The SPI interface supports clock rates up to 20 MHz for fast data updates. The 4.5 us settling time and +/-2 LSB typical INL provide high accuracy for precision control applications. A shutdown pin reduces power consumption to 0.32 uA for battery-powered designs.

The MCP4821-E/SN uses a resistor-string DAC architecture where the 12-bit digital code selects a tap point on a precision resistor ladder connected between the internal 2.048 V reference and ground. The selected voltage is buffered by a rail-to-rail output amplifier with selectable gain (1x or 2x). Data is written via SPI: the master asserts CS low, clocks in a 16-bit command word (4 config bits + 12 data bits) on the SDI pin, then deasserts CS to latch the data. The LDAC pin allows synchronous output updates when used with dual-channel devices. The SHDN pin forces the device into shutdown mode where the output goes to high impedance. The internal bandgap reference is trimmed during production for +/-2% accuracy across the temperature range.
