The PIC16F616-I/SL from Microchip Technology is an 8-bit mid-range PIC microcontroller optimized for motor control and power management applications. The device features 3.5 KB Flash, 128 bytes SRAM, and 256 bytes EEPROM. The 10-bit ADC with 8 channels and dual comparators with SR latch enable direct sensor and feedback interfaces. The Enhanced PWM module provides 10-bit resolution with dead-band control and a hardware limiter, making it suitable for brushless DC motor commutation and half-bridge drive. The internal 4/8 MHz oscillators eliminate the need for external clock components. The -I temperature grade extends operation to -40C for industrial applications.

The PIC16F616-I/SL uses Microchip’s enhanced mid-range 8-bit core with a 2-stage pipeline (fetch-execute). The 14-bit instruction word encodes both the opcode and operand in a single word, enabling single-word/single-cycle execution for most instructions. The 10-bit ADC uses successive approximation with a capacitor DAC array, converting in approximately 13.5 us. The dual comparators feed a hardware SR latch that can directly control the PWM output, enabling fast over-current or over-voltage protection without software intervention. The Enhanced PWM module generates complementary outputs with programmable dead-band insertion for half-bridge drivers, and includes a hardware limiter that can override the PWM duty cycle based on comparator feedback, ideal for motor current limiting. The internal oscillator provides 4 MHz or 8 MHz with +/-1% accuracy after calibration.
