The MC78L05ABDR2G from onsemi is a member of the MC78L00A series of fixed-output positive linear voltage regulators. It provides a regulated 5.0V output at up to 100mA from an input voltage of 7V to 30V. The A-grade version offers +/-4% output voltage accuracy over the operating temperature range. Internal protection features include thermal shutdown, short-circuit current limiting, and output transistor safe-area compensation, making the device virtually indestructible. The SOIC-8 package provides a compact surface-mount alternative to the classic TO-92 through-hole package. The R2G suffix indicates lead-free tape and reel packaging. With only input and output bypass capacitors required, the MC78L05AB provides the simplest possible 5V regulation solution.

The MC78L05AB operates as a series-pass linear regulator using a bandgap voltage reference and error amplifier. The internal bandgap reference provides a stable 1.25V which is amplified and divided internally to produce the 5.0V output. The error amplifier continuously compares a fraction of the output voltage with the internal reference and adjusts the series pass transistor drive to maintain regulation. The dropout voltage (1.7V typical at 40mA) represents the minimum input-output differential required for regulation. The thermal shutdown circuit monitors junction temperature and disables the pass transistor when it exceeds approximately 150°C. The short-circuit current limiter restricts output current to a safe level when the output is shorted to ground. The quiescent current of 3.8mA flows through the device to ground regardless of load.
