The MC3486DR from Texas Instruments is a monolithic quadruple differential line receiver designed to meet or exceed the requirements of ANSI standards EIA/TIA-422-B and EIA/TIA-423-B and ITU Recommendations V.10 and V.11. It provides four independent differential-input line receivers with TTL-compatible 3-state outputs. The 3-state outputs allow direct connection to bus-oriented systems. Designed to operate from a single 5V supply, the MC3486DR is optimized for use with the MC3487 quadruple differential line driver for complete differential data transmission systems.

The MC3486DR contains four independent differential line receivers. Each receiver compares the voltage difference between its non-inverting (A) and inverting (B) inputs. If the differential voltage exceeds the positive threshold (typically 200 mV), the output goes to a TTL high level; if below the negative threshold, the output goes low. The wide common-mode input range of +/-7V allows the device to reject common-mode noise picked up on long cable runs. Each pair of receivers shares an active-low output enable (EN) that forces the outputs to a high-impedance state when asserted, enabling bus sharing with other devices.
