The MAX9918ASA+T from Analog Devices (Maxim) is a high-side/low-side current-sense amplifier with an exceptionally wide -20V to +75V common-mode input range, far exceeding the supply voltage. Operating from a 2.7V to 5.5V single supply, it amplifies the small voltage across a sense resistor with pin-selectable gains of 50, 100, or 200 V/V. The 300uV max input offset voltage enables accurate measurement of small sense voltages. The ability to operate with common-mode voltages below ground makes it suitable for battery monitoring where the sense resistor may be at negative potential. Bandwidth is 220kHz at gain of 50.

The MAX9918ASA+T uses a precision differential amplifier with level-shifting input stage. (1) Level Shifting: The input stage uses a high-voltage matched resistor network to attenuate and level-shift the common-mode voltage. This allows the differential amplifier to process signals with -20V to +75V common-mode while operating from a 2.7-5.5V supply. (2) Differential Amplification: The differential voltage across the sense resistor (RS) is amplified by the selected gain. Gain is set by connecting the GSEL pin to GND (50x), floating (100x), or VCC (200x). (3) Output: The output voltage is VOUT = VREF + (ISENSE x RS x GAIN), where VREF is the reference voltage applied to the REF pin. This allows bidirectional current measurement with VREF set to VCC/2. (4) Protection: Input pins are protected against overvoltage and reverse polarity, surviving brief connection to 80V without damage.
