The MAX485ESA+T from Analog Devices (Maxim Integrated) is a low-power RS-485/RS-422 transceiver containing one driver and one receiver in a compact SOIC-8 package. With an unlimited slew rate driver, it supports data rates up to 2.5Mbps for half-duplex communication. The driver output features short-circuit current limiting and thermal shutdown protection, while the receiver includes a fail-safe feature guaranteeing a logic-high output when the input is open-circuit. The device supports up to 32 transceivers on a single bus with 1/8 unit load input impedance.

The MAX485ESA+T integrates a differential driver and a differential receiver with independent enable controls (DE for driver, /RE for receiver). The driver converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic to differential RS-485 signals on the A and B bus pins. The receiver converts the differential bus signal back to single-ended logic on the RO pin. In half-duplex mode, only the driver or receiver is active at a time, controlled by DE and /RE pins. When both are disabled, the device enters a low-power shutdown mode. The fail-safe receiver ensures a defined high output state when the bus is idle or floating.
