The MAX3232IPW is a 3.3V-powered, dual-channel RS-232 line driver/receiver from Texas Instruments, designed for true RS-232 communication from a single 3.0V to 5.5V supply. The device integrates two drivers and two receivers with an onboard dual charge pump that generates the required ±5.5V RS-232 voltage levels from the single low-voltage supply. Enhanced ESD protection of ±15kV HBM (per IEC 61000-4-2) on all RS-232 pins provides robust protection against electrostatic discharge events. The device requires only four external 0.1μF charge pump capacitors, minimizing board space. With a typical supply current of 1mA, it is suitable for battery-powered and low-power applications.

The MAX3232IPW uses an integrated dual charge pump to generate ±5.5V supply rails from a single 3.0V to 5.5V input. The charge pump consists of a voltage doubler and a voltage inverter, each requiring two external 0.1μF capacitors. The drivers convert TTL/CMOS logic-level signals to RS-232-compliant voltage levels (±5V minimum swing). The receivers convert RS-232 input signals to TTL/CMOS logic levels with hysteresis for noise immunity. The internal regulation ensures RS-232 output levels remain compliant across the full supply voltage range and under load conditions.
