The MAX3232ESE+T from Analog Devices (Maxim) is a 3.0V to 5.5V RS-232 transceiver providing 2 drivers and 2 receivers. It uses an internal charge pump to generate +/-5.5V RS-232 levels from a single supply, requiring only 4 external 0.1uF capacitors. The device meets EIA/TIA-232-F specifications with 250kbps data rate. ±15kV HBM ESD protection on RS-232 pins provides robust ESD protection. The auto-powerdown feature reduces supply current to 1uA when no valid RS-232 signal is detected.

The MAX3232E uses a dual charge pump to generate positive and negative voltage rails from a single 3.0V to 5.5V supply. The first charge pump doubles VCC to approximately +5.5V, and the second inverts this to approximately -5.5V. These rails power the driver output stages, which swing between +5.5V and -5.5V to meet RS-232 specifications. The receivers accept RS-232 levels and convert them to TTL/CMOS logic levels. The auto-powerdown circuit monitors receiver inputs and enters low-power mode when no valid signal is detected.
