The MAX232ESE+T from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a dual RS-232 driver/receiver with integrated charge pump in a SOIC-16 tape-and-reel package. The device operates from a single 4.5V to 5.5V supply and uses an internal charge pump to generate the +/-9V voltage levels required for TIA/EIA-232-F communication, eliminating the need for external bipolar +/-12V supplies. The device includes two transmitter drivers that convert TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-232 levels, and two receivers that convert RS-232 levels back to TTL/CMOS. The receivers feature 1.3V typical threshold with 0.5V hysteresis for noise immunity, and can accept input voltages up to +/-30V. Only four external 1uF capacitors are required for the charge pump. The device supports data rates up to 120kbps and is compliant with TIA/EIA-232-F and ITU V.28 standards. ESD protection exceeds 2kV HBM per JESD22-A114.

The MAX232ESE+T uses an integrated charge pump to generate bipolar RS-232 voltages from a single 5V supply. (1) Charge Pump: A dual charge pump circuit uses four external 1uF capacitors to generate V+ (approximately +9V) and V- (approximately -9V) from the 5V VCC supply. The first stage doubles VCC to generate V+, and the second stage inverts V+ to generate V-. An internal oscillator drives the charge pump switching at approximately 25kHz. (2) Drivers: Each of the two drivers converts TTL/CMOS input levels (0-5V) to RS-232 output levels (+/-9V). When the driver input is TTL high, the output is approximately -9V (RS-232 space). When the driver input is TTL low, the output is approximately +9V (RS-232 mark). The output slew rate is approximately 4V/us, limiting the maximum data rate to approximately 120kbps while maintaining compliance with RS-232 transition requirements. (3) Receivers: Each receiver converts RS-232 input levels (+/-3V to +/-15V) to TTL/CMOS logic levels (0-5V). The receiver threshold is 1.3V with 0.5V hysteresis, providing noise immunity. The receivers tolerate input voltages up to +/-30V.
