The M25PE80-VMN6TP from STMicroelectronics is an 8Mbit (1M x 8) serial flash memory with SPI interface in a SOIC-8 package. The device supports SPI clock frequencies up to 50MHz for firmware execution and data access. The memory is organized as 16 sectors of 64KB each, with 256-byte page programming capability. A unique feature of the M25PE series is support for both page erase (256 bytes) and sector erase (64KB), providing fine-grained data management not available in many SPI flash devices that only support sector or block erase. Page programming time is typically 2ms, and page erase time is typically 20ms. Write protection features include individual sector lock-down, hardware write protect (W) pin, and write-enable latch. The hold (HOLD) pin allows the SPI communication to be paused without resetting the device, useful for shared SPI bus applications. Deep power-down mode reduces current consumption to below 5uA for battery-powered applications.

The M25PE80-VMN6TP uses NOR flash memory with SPI serial interface. (1) Memory Array: The 8Mbit storage is organized as 1,048,576 bytes in 16 sectors of 65,536 bytes (64KB) each. Each sector contains 256 pages of 256 bytes. (2) SPI Protocol: Commands, addresses, and data are transferred serially via the SPI bus (S, Q, D, C pins). The device supports SPI mode 0 and mode 3. (3) Read: The READ command outputs data starting at the specified address at up to 50MHz. (4) Program: Page programming writes up to 256 bytes in one operation. The WREN command must be issued before programming. (5) Erase: The unique page erase feature clears one 256-byte page to all 1s, useful when only a small amount of data needs updating. Sector erase clears one 64KB sector. Bulk erase clears the entire array. (6) Protection: Block protect bits in the status register define protected address ranges. The W pin provides hardware write protection.
