The LTC4079IDD#TRPBF from Analog Devices is a wide-input-range standalone linear battery charger designed for charging Li-Ion, LiFePO4, and lead-acid batteries from high-voltage sources up to 60 V. Housed in a compact 3 mm x 3 mm DFN-8 package, the device integrates the power pass transistor and requires no external MOSFET, blocking diode, or current-sense resistor. The charge current is programmable up to 50 mA via a single external resistor, and the battery chemistry and float voltage are pin-selectable, supporting 4.2 V Li-Ion, 3.6 V LiFePO4, and lead-acid configurations. The device includes NTC thermistor input for battery temperature monitoring and qualification, automatic recharge when the battery drops below the recharge threshold, and trickle charge for deeply depleted cells. The wide -40°C to +125°C operating temperature range and 60 V input capability make it ideal for automotive and industrial applications.

The LTC4079 operates as a linear regulator that drops the input voltage to the required battery float voltage while limiting the charge current. The internal pass transistor regulates both voltage and current simultaneously, operating in constant-current mode when the battery voltage is below the float voltage, and transitioning to constant-voltage mode as the battery approaches full charge. The charge current is set by an external resistor on the PROG pin. When the charge current drops to C/10 (configurable), the charger terminates and enters a low-current state, monitoring the battery voltage for automatic recharge. The NTC pin monitors battery temperature through an external thermistor and suspends charging if the temperature is outside the qualified range. The CAS pin selects the battery chemistry and float voltage. Trickle charge at a reduced rate is applied when the battery voltage is below a deeply depleted threshold to safely precondition the cells.
