The LT1764EQ#TRPBF from Analog Devices is a 3A low-dropout (LDO) regulator optimized for fast transient response and ultra-low output noise. With only 340mV maximum dropout voltage at 3A output current and 20uV RMS output noise over the 10Hz to 100kHz bandwidth, it provides exceptionally clean power for noise-sensitive RF and precision analog circuits. The output voltage is adjustable from 1.21V using an external resistor divider, and the input voltage range extends up to 20V. The device features fast transient response under 10us for a 3A load step, thermal shutdown and current limit protection, and a shutdown pin for logic-controlled power sequencing. The E suffix denotes TSSOP-16 package and TRPBF indicates tape and reel with lead-free finish.

The LT1764EQ#TRPBF operates as a low-dropout linear regulator using a PNP pass transistor. (1) The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (from the external resistor divider) against the internal 1.21V reference, and drives the PNP pass transistor to maintain regulation. The PNP architecture allows the very low dropout voltage since the pass transistor saturation voltage can be as low as 340mV at 3A. (2) The ultra-low 20uV RMS output noise is achieved by an optimized internal reference design and by placing a noise reduction capacitor (CNR) from the REF/BYP pin to ground, which filters the reference noise bandwidth. (3) The fast transient response is achieved through a high-bandwidth error amplifier and a low-ESR output capacitor network. When the load current steps from 0 to 3A, the error amplifier rapidly adjusts the pass transistor gate drive, and the output capacitor supplies the transient current until the loop settles within 10us.
