The LP2951CMX/NOPB from Texas Instruments is a micropower low-dropout voltage regulator capable of supplying up to 100mA of output current. It features an extremely low quiescent current of 75uA typical, which increases only slightly in dropout, making it ideal for battery-powered systems where long battery life is critical. The device can be configured for a fixed 5V output by connecting the FEEDBACK pin to the VTAP pin, or the output voltage can be programmed from 1.24V to 29V using an external resistor divider. The LP2951 includes an error flag output that warns of a low output voltage (useful for power-on reset), and a logic-compatible shutdown input that can turn the regulator on and off. The tight initial tolerance (0.5% typical), excellent line and load regulation (0.05% typical), and very low temperature coefficient make the LP2951 useful as a low-power voltage reference as well as a regulator.

The LP2951CMX/NOPB operates through four main subsystems: (1) Bandgap reference – A precision trimmed bandgap reference generates a stable 1.235V reference voltage with very low temperature drift (20 ppm/C typical for new chip). This reference sets the output voltage accuracy. (2) Error amplifier – A high-gain error amplifier compares the feedback voltage (from the OUTPUT or an external divider) with the internal reference. The amplifier drives the base of the series pass transistor to maintain the output at the desired voltage. Tight loop gain ensures excellent line regulation (0.05% typical) and load regulation (0.05% typical). (3) Pass element and protection – A PNP series pass transistor provides the low dropout characteristic (380mV at 100mA). Current limiting protects against output short circuits, and thermal shutdown disables the output if junction temperature becomes excessive. (4) Auxiliary functions – The error comparator generates an active-low flag when the output drops below the regulated value by approximately 5%, useful for system power-on reset. The shutdown input accepts logic levels; when driven above 2V, the regulator output is disabled, reducing quiescent current to near zero.
