The LP2951ACMM-3.3/NOPB is a Texas Instruments micropower low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator in a VSSOP-8 (DGK) package. The device provides a fixed 3.3V output at up to 100mA from an input voltage range of 2.3V to 30V, making it suitable for battery-powered systems and high-voltage industrial applications. The 380mV typical dropout voltage at 100mA allows operation with minimal input-to-output voltage differential, extending battery life in portable applications. The 75uA typical quiescent current increases only slightly in dropout, further prolonging battery life. The device features tight output voltage accuracy (0.5% typical), extremely good load and line regulation (0.05% typical each), and a very low output voltage temperature coefficient, making it useful as a low-power voltage reference. The error flag output (active low) warns of a low output voltage condition, typically 5% below nominal, and can be used for power-on reset. The logic-compatible shutdown input enables the regulator to be turned off, reducing supply current to near zero. The device is stable with low-ESR output capacitors including ceramic capacitors.

The LP2951ACMM-3.3/NOPB uses a PNP pass transistor in a common-collector (emitter-follower) configuration to achieve low dropout voltage. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (from the internal resistor divider for the fixed 3.3V version) with a precision 1.235V bandgap reference. The error amplifier output drives the base of the PNP pass transistor, regulating the output voltage. In dropout, the PNP transistor saturates, and the dropout voltage is simply the VCE(sat) of the pass transistor (380mV at 100mA). The foldback current limit reduces the output current during short-circuit conditions to prevent excessive power dissipation. The thermal shutdown circuit disables the pass transistor when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 165C. The error flag comparator monitors the output voltage and pulls the ERROR pin low when the output drops below approximately 5% of the nominal voltage.
