The LM73606RNPR from Texas Instruments is a 3.5V to 36V, 6A synchronous step-down DC-DC converter with integrated high-side and low-side MOSFETs in a wettable flanks QFN-30 package. The device features 15uA typical no-load quiescent current, 350kHz to 2.2MHz adjustable switching frequency with external synchronization, and auto-mode (PFM at light load, PWM at heavy load) or forced PWM operation selectable via the SYNC/MODE pin. The integrated MOSFETs offer 53mOhm HS and 31mOhm LS on-resistance for high efficiency. The 60ns minimum on-time supports high step-down ratios at high frequency. Protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limit with hiccup mode, thermal shutdown, and output overvoltage protection. The RNP suffix denotes WQFN-30 package with wettable flanks for automotive solder joint inspection, in tape and reel.

The LM73606RNPR operates as a peak current-mode synchronous buck converter. (1) The high-side MOSFET (53mOhm) connects the input voltage to the inductor during the on-time, storing energy in the inductor. The low-side MOSFET (31mOhm) provides the inductor current return path during the off-time. The integrated MOSFETs eliminate external transistors and their associated gate drive circuitry, reducing component count and PCB area. (2) The peak current-mode control scheme regulates the output by comparing the peak inductor current to the error amplifier output. The internal compensation simplifies design by eliminating external compensation components. The 1.006V feedback voltage is compared with an external resistor divider output. The precision enable pin with 1.2V threshold allows programming the input UVLO with external resistors. (3) In auto mode, the converter operates in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) at light loads using diode emulation (low-side FET turned off when inductor current approaches zero), reducing switching losses and achieving 15uA no-load quiescent current. In forced PWM mode, the converter always operates in continuous conduction mode (CCM), maintaining constant frequency for EMI-sensitive applications. The external SYNC input allows synchronization to a system clock, and the RT resistor sets the free-running frequency between 350kHz and 2.2MHz.
