The LM5160XDNTT is a 65V, 2A synchronous buck/Fly-Buck DC/DC converter from Texas Instruments with both high-side and low-side MOSFETs integrated on-chip, eliminating the need for an external Schottky diode. The adaptive constant on-time (COT) control scheme requires no external loop compensation while delivering fast transient response and supporting high step-down ratios. The switching frequency is resistor-programmable from 50kHz to 1MHz. The FPWM pin selects between forced continuous conduction mode (for multi-output Fly-Buck isolated topologies) and DCM mode (for high light-load efficiency). The ±1% feedback reference ensures tight output regulation over the full -40°C to +125°C temperature range. Protection features include peak/valley current limiting, adjustable UVLO, and thermal shutdown.

The LM5160 uses an adaptive constant on-time (COT) control scheme. When the FB pin voltage falls below the reference, the high-side MOSFET turns on for a pre-calculated on-time that is inversely proportional to VIN, resulting in a nearly constant switching frequency. After the on-time, the high-side FET turns off and the low-side synchronous FET turns on until the inductor current decays to the valley current limit threshold or the FB voltage rises above the reference. A transconductance error amplifier minimizes the steady-state DC error between the average FB voltage and the internal reference, providing ±1% regulation accuracy without the Type-II/III compensation networks required by voltage-mode controllers. In FPWM mode, the low-side FET is kept on even at zero load (allowing negative inductor current), which is essential for Fly-Buck topologies where the coupled inductor secondary must always have a well-defined magnetizing current waveform. In DCM mode, the low-side FET turns off when the inductor current reaches zero, preventing negative current and improving light-load efficiency.
