The LM5117PMHX/NOPB is a Texas Instruments 65V synchronous step-down (buck) DC-DC controller in a 20-pin HTSSOP package. As a controller (not a converter), it drives external N-channel MOSFETs for the high-side and low-side switches, allowing designers to optimize the power stage for specific output current and efficiency requirements. The 5.5V to 65V input range supports telecom 48V, automotive 12V/24V, and industrial bus rails. The selectable 200kHz or 480kHz switching frequency allows trade-offs between efficiency (lower frequency) and solution size (higher frequency). The synchronous rectification eliminates the Schottky diode conduction loss, improving efficiency especially at low output voltages. The current mode control provides cycle-by-cycle current limiting and simplified loop compensation. The soft start eliminates inrush current during startup, and the frequency control pin allows synchronization to an external clock or frequency dithering for EMI reduction.

The LM5117 uses peak current mode control for the buck converter. The error amplifier compares the FB pin voltage against an internal reference, and the resulting COMP voltage sets the peak inductor current threshold. The high-side MOSFET turns on at the beginning of each switching cycle, ramping up the inductor current. When the current sense signal reaches the COMP threshold, the high-side MOSFET turns off and the low-side synchronous MOSFET turns on. The cycle repeats at the next clock edge. The current mode control provides cycle-by-cycle overcurrent protection and simplifies loop compensation. The adaptive dead-time control inserts a non-overlap delay between high-side and low-side transitions to prevent shoot-through current.
